BaumannWohlenberg automates cutting with BASS system whilst MBO revolutionises stacking with Co-Bo Stack

Author: SuperUser Account/Friday, May 31, 2019/Categories: Technical Features

At the 2019 Baumann Group open house (14-16 May 2019) both MBO and hosts BaumannWohlenberg showcased the very latest technology to reduce operator fatigue, increase efficiency and streamline workflows by removing bottlenecks. By introducing robots to fully automate labour intensive and repetitive tasks.

NEW from BaumannWohlenberg - BASS System, automatic cutting and handling system

Baumann BASS System

Following the completely automated jogging process with the Baumann BASA system, BaumannWohlenberg has now also further automated the cutting process. BASS is the name of the latest innovation developed by Baumann. BASS stands for Baumann Automatic Cutting System and does exactly what its name implies.

Baumann has once again strengthened its position among the leaders in innovation and technology for cutting processes and logistics in the graphic industry sector.

For all products that have the same cross-sectional layout, the integrated robot takes over the tasks of the operator. Before the cut, the layer is positioned at the back gauge and held in position until the clamping bar fixes the layer. After the cut, it takes over the alignment of the layer and then transports it to the next processing machine. This feeding can be done either to the right, left or, in alternation, to the right and left.

The BASS system can be installed and included on all BaumannWohlenberg guillotines of sizes 115 to 168. The strip width range remains the same across the 3 sizes (40mm-150mm) however strip length ranges vary; 300mm – 1100mm for the 115, 300mm – 1300mm on the 132 and 300 – 1600 on the 168. Pile heights up to 120mm and 25 second cycle times are standard across the range with BASS.

  • Automatic alignment and transfer
  • Easy to programme
  • Latest robotic technology

The BASS system comes with auto alignment turn table to fit into a smaller footprint

MBO CoBot stacking system

Folding machine manufacturer MBO is revolutionising the labour-intensive, manual stacking of folded signatures with the new, automatic “CoBo-Stack”.

While the MBO CoBo-Stack is filling one pallet, the operator can move the full pallet to the other side of the delivery and prepare the next empty pallet.

The MBO CoBo-Stack is designated as a cobot – a collaborative robot – which needs no protective cage. If the operator touches the cobot, the cobot comes to a full stop automatically.

The stacks of folded signatures are transported from the A500/A700 delivery units onto the table of the CoBo-Stack. The robotic arm then picks up the stacks from the table and deposits them on pallets. This is extremely labour-saving for the operator. The pallets can be positioned on both sides of the delivery, allowing uninterrupted operation. While the MBO CoBo-Stack is filling one pallet, the operator can move the full pallet to the other side of the delivery and prepare the next empty pallet.

With an indicator lamp signalling various operating statuses along with an acoustic signal, there is no need for the operator to remain directly at the folding machine, allowing them carry out other tasks, such as quality control or preparing the next folding job.

The MBO CoBo-Stack is suitable for use behind folding machines processing medium to high print runs. At the Baumann Open House, it will be on display behind the MBO K8RS, the fastest folding machine worldwide in its format class. The cobot has its own control unit thus allowing it to be retrofitted to existing deliveries of type A500/A700.
